PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make dispersion and distribution of spray appropriate for each operating range to improve exhaust performance, in a direct injection type diesel engine. SOLUTION: An operational state of an engine is detected, and a position where the spray S injected by a fuel injection valve 21 is collided with a crown surface of a piston 101 is switched depending on the detected operational status. In a low load region, the spray S after the collision is collided with a first position P1 for unevenly distributing the spray in a cavity 101a of the crown surface. In a high load region, the spray S is made to collide with a second position P2 different from the first position P1 and dispersing the spray to a whole combustion chamber.
