A service device of an IMS(IP(Internet Protocol) Multimedia Subsystem) in a portable terminal accessible to a wireless LAN(Local Area Network) and a mobile communication system and a method are provided to confirm whether a wireless LAN communication unit is usable through an invite request message, and to supply power to the communication unit only when communication is performed with the wireless LAN, thereby reducing power consumption. A portable terminal is registered in an IMS server(300). If an invite request message is received through a mobile communication network, it is confirmed whether the message demands an IMS service which requires connection with a wireless LAN(302,304). If so, power is supplied to a wireless LAN communication unit. Connection to a wireless LAN access point is attempted through the communication unit supplied with the power(306). An invite response message which includes information on the access point is generated(308). The invite response message is sent to a terminal which sends the invite request message, through the wireless LAN(310).
