PURPOSE:To eliminate central segregation and to obtain a defectless stock ingot by intermittently and compressively deforming the ingot by forging dies to suppress the fluctuation of the molten steel in the end period of solidification. CONSTITUTION:A rolling down lever 3 is moved by a using a hydraulic cylinder 4 and the ingot is rolled down by using the dies 5 provided to the lever. This forging device is moved downward at the same speed as the speed of the ingot during the ingot rolling reduction. The forging device is reset to the home position by using a hydraulic cylinder 8 for returning after the surface rolling reduction. Since the ingot is intermittently pinched and rolled down by the forging dies, a solidified shell 2 is crushed and the pool of the unsolidified molten steel 1 is shutt off. The generation of the central segregation by the shrinkage of the pool is thus obviated.
