An auxiliary automatic carburetter for supplying a spark-ignition internal-combustion engine with an enriched charge upon cold starting and throughout the warming up period has each of the following features: - (a) a casing having an inlet 2 for air which when the engine is running has been heated by the exhaust manifold and having adjacent to the air inlet a mixture outlet - connection 3 to the inlet manifold; (b) a fuel orifice supplied by a float chamber and in communication with the mixture outlet connection under control of a spring-loaded tapered needle 39, the setting of which, and hence the mixture ratio, is influenced by the depression produced in the mixture outlet connection when the engine is running; (c) an axially movable control valve 6 which has its seating constituted by the mouth of the mixture outlet connection and which is effective in response conjointly to the temperature of the inflowing air and the depression in the inlet manifold, when the engine is running to control the amount of mixture delivered through the outlet connection for unit of time; (d) a flexible temperature - sensitive device 16 that regulates the setting of the control valve in accordance with the ambient air temperature, this device, which is located in a suction chamber, having walls of thermally insulating material possessing sufficient thermal capacity to ensure that its rate of cooling is approximately the same as that of the engine; (e) a restricted orifice 15 that affords permanent communication between the suction chamber 4 and a pneumatic balance chamber 5 of which the control valve forms at least part of a movable boundary; (f) the control valve has within its seating zone a restricted orifice (not shown) that affords permanent communication between the balance chamber and the mouth of the mixture outlet connection and (g) the relative sizes of the two orifices mentioned at (e) and (f) are such that when it is open and the engine is running the control valve imposes a slight tensile load upon the temperature - sensitive device. The float chamber delivers fuel to a chamber 31 of which the base is formed by a spring loaded diaphragm 32 that engages the tip 38 of the tapered needle. A flexible temperature -sensitive device 53 regulates the setting of the tapered needle. |
