Dispersions useful for paints and varnishes comprise an aq. phase and a population A of particles with a size of 10-1000 nm of a (co)polymer having an available acid (esp. carboxylic) functionality alcoholic functionality of 0.3-1.5 meq/g. Pref. the latex particles A are obtd. e.g. by copolymerisation of (a) one or more non-ionic monomers contg. no alcoholic functions such as isoprene, butadiene, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, styrene, (meth) acrylic acid esters, etc; (b) one or more monomers with an alcoholic function such as phenols with an ethylenic function activated by an aromatic ring, acrylic esters of a polyol, esp. a diol, in which at least one of the alcoholic functions is free, or cpds. such as the acrylamide of ethanolamine; and (c) an acid functional monomer such as (meth) acrylic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, unsatd. anhydrides, etc. |
