In one embodiment, an apparatus for optical communication is disclosed. An optical sub-assembly and optical platform may form the apparatus. Lasers contained in the hermetically sealed optical sub-assembly can be coupled to a modulator on the optical platform. The optical modulator can access an optical network using beams of light sent from the laser.

a hermetically sealed component; a laser disposed within the hermetically sealed component; a thermo-electrical cooler disposed within the hermetically sealed component and configured to dissipate heat generated by the laser; and a window forming part of the hermetically sealed component and configured to permit transmission of a light beam between the laser and an optical input situated outside the hermetically sealed component.
