A method and an apparatus for recording and reproducing multimedia data are provided to perform the record and reproduction of the multimedia data for a semiconductor recording device and an optical recording device. A recording device selecting unit selects a semiconductor recording device having a disc loader(1050) and an optical recording device having a memory card(1016). A photographing/reproduction selecting unit selects a photographing mode for photographing an image or a reproduction mode for reproducing a recorded image. An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)(1036) displays the photographed image, the reproducing image, or menu information. When the semiconductor recording device is selected, the recording device selecting unit photographs or reproduces a still image in the photographing mode or the reproduction mode. When the optical recording device is selected, the recording device selecting unit photographs or reproduces a moving picture in the photographing mode or the reproduction mode.
