PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for operating an internal combustion engine enabling operation by over-rich air fuel mixture without exceeding over-rich combustion limit of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: In the method for operating the internal combustion engine having a target value relating to a predetermined parameter characterizing air fuel mixture under at least one operation condition of the internal combustion engine 1, at least a value of parameter characterizing the quality of combustion is defined, the value defined in relation to at least one parameter characterizing the quality of combustion is compared with a first predetermined threshold, and the target value is corrected when deviation of the value defined in relation to at least one parameter characterizing the quality of combustion from the first predetermined threshold exceeds a second predetermined threshold.
