PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing a halogen-substituted benzenedimethanol. SOLUTION: The method for producing a halogen-substituted benzenedimethanol represented by formula (2) (X<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>4</SP>are each the same or different and a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom with the proviso that at least one of X<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>4</SP>is a halogen atom) comprises reacting a halogen-substituted terephthalic acid diester represented by formula (1) with a boron hydride compound in an organic solvent in the presence of 0.5-10 molar amount water based on the boron hydride compound.
