PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and a color discrimination method for improving the accuracy of color discrimination. SOLUTION: In the image reader 10, an original platen provided between an original and three line sensors, and the three line sensors are relatively moved at a speed different from an original carrying speed. Since an inter-line correction section 255 synchronizes three data output from the three line sensors so that the three data become pixels obtained by reading the same position of the original, dust present on the original platen appears at different positions of the original in chromatic colors. Prior to carrying the original, the dust position detection section 265 of the image reader detects the position of the dust on the original platen adhering to the original platen; a color discrimination section 263 determines the discrimination pixel used for the discrimination among a plurality of pixels included in each of read data obtained; while the original is carried to an original read position on the basis of the position of the dust on the original platen and discriminates whether the original is a color original or a black/white original, on the basis of the discrimination pixel.
