Thermal insulation for a cold liquefied gas storage container is provided by a stagnant layer of vapour 7 of the stored liquid 2 bounded by the container base and its vertical wall or walls and an internal casing 4 of porous material, e.g. felt. The casing 4 is supported on blocks 3 of insulating material and may have slots 6 to provide additional flow of liquid for vaporization in space 7. Convection currents are reduced by coating the outer face of casing 4 with a thin layer of sealing material 10. |
