The invention relates to m-phenylenediamine derivatives of formula (I) and agents for dyeing keratin fibres, especially human hair, which contain as a coupling constituent at least one m-phenylenediamine derivative of formula (I) in a cosmetically acceptable carrier. In said formula (I), R₁ represents a branched or unbranched C₁-C₈ alkyl group which can optionally carry one or more hydroxy groups, R₂, R₃ and R₄ independently represent a hydrogen atom, a C₁-C₄ alkyl group, a C₁-C₄ monohydroxyalkyl group, a C₂-C₄ polyhydroxyalkyl group, a C₁-C₄ alkoxy group, a C₁-C₄ alkoxy (C₁-C₄) alkyl group or a halogene atom.
