PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron chloride-based iron oxide powder for a red pigment exhibiting a brilliant red color by suppressing the influence of Mn contained in iron oxide; and to provide a method for advantageously producing the same. SOLUTION: The iron oxide powder for the red pigment contains 0.1-3 mass% Mn and 0.03-3 mass% Al and is characterized in that the specific surface area is 6-14 m<SP>2</SP>/g, preferably, the mass ratio of Al to Mn is 0.3-25, further preferably, D<SB>50</SB>is≤0.7μm as measured with a laser diffraction type particle diameter distribution measurement instrument and the content of aggregate particles each having a size of≥2μm is≤5 vol.%. The iron oxide powder is obtained by spray roasting an iron chloride solution containing 0.1-3 mass% Mn and 0.03-3 mass% Al and having a mass ratio of Al to Mn of 0.3-25 at a temperature of 550-800°C and then pulverizing the roasted material.
