PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device capable of operating a balance in the presence of static electricity according to user's request. SOLUTION: The balance equipped with weighing pans 4, 104 having function for receiving loads 5, 6, 25 to be weighed and an electronic weighing module 27 including a measuring unit 28 is equipped with a static electricity sensor 10. The static electricity sensor is arranged so that accumulation of the static electricity existing on the loads 5, 6, 25 arranged or to be arranged on the weighing pans 4, 104 can be detected. This method 1, 101 for operating the balance includes following steps for: detecting existence of the static electricity by the static electricity sensor 10; transferring information on a value characterizing the magnitude of the charge to the measuring unit 28; comparing a value characterizing the magnitude of the detected charge with a threshold specifiable beforehand; and starting the electronic weighing module 27.
