PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and equipment for treating phenol-containing water, in each of which the operation of an azeotropic distillation column is controlled by monitoring the phenol concentration in the waste water to be discharged from a settler arranged in the top part of the azeotropic distillation column and finding out the fluctuation of the phenol concentration in the waste water in early stages to stably keep low the phenol concentration in the waste water without using liquid-liquid extraction equipment (an extractive distillation column) or the like on the downstream side of the azeotropic distillation column, in the azeotropic distillation column in which phenol-containing water is treated by azeotropic distillation using an azeotropic agent for forming an azeotrope with water. SOLUTION: An automatic gas chromatography apparatus 7 is arranged on a waste water line from the settler tank 3 arranged in the top part of the azeotropic distillation column 1 in which phenol-containing water is treated by azeotropic distillation using the azeotropic agent for forming the azeotrope with water. The phenol concentration in the waste water is continuously measured and monitored by the automatic gas chromatography apparatus 7 to control the operation of the azeotropic distillation column 1.
