PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for controlling an internal combustion engine capable of inhibiting a harmful influence such as striking noise generated at a time of restart of the internal combustion engine provided with a variable valve train provided with a hydraulic lash adjuster. SOLUTION: Variable valve trains 11A, 11B including cams 41-44 for driving intake valves 2, valve lifters 4 transmitting rotary motion of the cams 41-44 to the intake valves 2, the hydraulic lash adjusters 20 reducing gaps between the cams 41-44 and the valve lifters 4 are provided. The variable valve trains 11A, 11B are controlled to provide lift of the intake valves 2 making contraction quantity of the lash adjuster minimum in reference to a condition where the intake valve 2 is closed after receiving stop request of the internal combustion engine.
