There is provided an automobile key system (300) operable to enable user access to functions of an automobile by using an electronic key (230). The system (300) comprises a socket arrangement (220) for receiving the key (230). Moreover, the system (300) includes a switch arrangement (240) for user selection of one or more functions of the automobile. Furthermore, the system (300) comprises an electronic unit (310) operable to communicate with said key (230) and operable to be user-invoked into one or more operating states when the key (230) is acceptable to the electronic unit (310). The system (300) is distinguished in that the electronic unit (310) is operable to be selectively user-invoked into mutually different states in response to a length of a time period during which a switch (240) of the switch arrangement (240) is user-depressed in operation. Beneficially, the switch arrangement (240) comprises solely one switch (240) to simplify dashboard panel (210) complexity and reduce manufacturing costs for the automobile.
