PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive chain drive device for a passenger conveyor capable of exactly detecting whether or not a drive chain for driving a handrail belt of an escalator or the like is lengthened by mechanical abrasion and in the state not withstanding use. SOLUTION: The handrail belt drive device for the passenger conveyor is provided with an idler 12 abutted on a drive chain 8 and rotatable by following to circulation movement of the drive chain 8; an biasing mechanism 13 for capturing the idler 12 and biasing the idler 12 in a direction solving deflection of the drive chain 8; and a position detector 14 capable of detecting a position of the idler 12 moved by being biased by the biasing mechanism 13. A worker objectively detects whether or not a degree of deflection of the drive chain, i.e., a degree of elongation of length by abrasion of the drive chain 8 is within an allowable range from a scale position of a scale plate 14a indicated by a pointer 14b of the position detector 14 and can quickly and suitably maintain it.
