SCALABLE MPLS FAST REROUTE SWITCHOVER WITH REDUCED COMPLEXITY

A Fast Reroute implementation suitable for use in a label switched router. Reroute from protected tunnels to backup tunnels may be achieved in constant time irrespective of the numbers of protected forwarding equivalence classes and protected tunnels. Upon detection of a failure, forwarding data structure entries containing information regarding output adjacencies affected by the failure are modified and all protected traffic is forwarded via a backup tunnel using a second output adjacency.
