A crimping tool comprises a body member 1 having a fixed jaw 30, a movable jaw 12, a retention jaw 18 positioned between the jaws 30 and 12 and spring means adapted to urge the retention jaw against the fixed jaw to grip an article therebetween independently of movement of the movable jaw. Die grooves are provided in the jaws 18, 30. An operating handle 2 is coupled to the movable jaw 12 by a pivot 11 and to the body 1 by a pivoted link 3 so as to advance the jaw 12 towards the jaw 30 when the handle 2 is moved towards a handle mounted on the body 1. The jaw 2 is returned to open position by a tension spring 10. The handle 2 has a ratchet 8 which engages with a spring loaded pivoted pawl 6 on the body 1 to ensure that a full cycle operation of the jaws is performed. The retention jaw 18 is positioned by a pair of pistons 17 which are received in a pair of cylindrical bores 16 in the body 15 of the movable jaw 12, the jaw 18 being coupled to the jaw 12 by compression springs 19 positioned between the pistons 17 and the bottom of the bores 16 so that the jaws 12 and 18 move together during at least part of the compression cycle, force being transmitted directly from the jaw 12 to the jaw 18 after the springs 19 have been compressed to a given degree. The retention jaw 18 is releasably restrained against movement in response to the springs 19 by resilient latch means 23 interposed between the jaws 12 and 18, the latch means including interlocking detents 24, 25 on the jaws 12, 18 which snap into engagement when the movable jaw 12 is moved within a given distance of the retention jaw 18, a manually operable release button 26 being provided. In a modification (Fig. 7) the retention jaw 34 is hinged to the fixed jaw in the manner of a flap so that it may be manually tilted away from the fixed jaw, against the action of a torsion spring 38. |
