Poly alcohol-based aqueous binder composition for fiber products

Disclosed herein is a binder composition comprising a low molecular weight polycarboxylic acid, such as maleic anhydride, and a low molecular weight poly alcohol, such as polyvinyl alcohol, that exhibits improved cure performance with reduced emissions without sacrificing the performance of the final product or complicating the manufacturing process. The binder composition may also incorporate a cure catalyst or accelerant such as sodium hypophosphite. This binder composition is utilised in the manufacture of glass fibres products that may be suitable for thermal insulation. Particularly disclosed is a binder composition comprising: a polyalcohol having a molecular weight of between 200 and 13,000, the polyalcohol comprising an oligomer or polymer of one or more alcohols and having a number average molecular weight of at least 200; a low molecular weight polycarboxylic acid selected from a group consisting of malic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid, actic, acetic, diglycollic acid, succinic acid and oligomers thereof having an average molecular weight of less than about 1000, and mixtures thereof; and water.
