[Also in Divisions B2 and B4-B5] Embossed polymeric sheet material is made by casting a paste, of, e.g., P.V.C., upon an embossed or smooth surfaced silicone elastomer band, heating the paste to at least partially gel it, and finally embossing the hot sheet thus formed, either on the side which contacted the bond or the reverse side. The embossing may be effected whilst the sheet is still upon the band or after it has been removed therefrom. One or more layers may be cast, one of the layers being foamed if desired, and various types of backing sheets, e.g. woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics, felted materials or paper, may be applied to the layer or layers, the backing sheet carrying a prefoamed plastics layer, if desired. In one embodiment (see Fig. 1, not shown), P.V.C. paste is roller coated on to a smooth band gelled by passage through an oven, covered by a preheated woven or expanded plastics covered knitted fabric, and finally embossed after passage over a stripping roller, by a cooled embossing roller. In a second embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown), a layer of non-forming material followed by a layer of foaming material are rollercoated on to a smooth bond, a fitted fabric applied, the layers passed through a gelling oven, and the laminate thus formed finally embossed upon its bond contacting face by a cooled roller. |
