PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a deposit removing method for an image reader capable of efficiently removing sticking substances such as dust or dirt sticked on an optical system or an imaging element without step-out in a motor, and to provide the image reader. SOLUTION: A resonance device 18 having a resonator 185 resonating at a prescribed resonance frequency is disposed on a backside of a reflective surface of a mirror 14 inside a carriage 10 of a scanner. During scanning of the carriage 10, vibration generated by a motor is transmitted to the resonance device 18 to resonate the resonator 185. At that time, the resonator 185 repeats abutment against and separation from the mirror 14 to apply impact on the mirror 14, thereby efficiently removing the sticking substances such as dust or dirt deposited on the mirror 14.
