PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a color liquid crystal display assembly by which luminance of a backlight can be varied according to the area of a screen portion displaying white so as to particularly impart a brilliant appearance to a portion of an image displaying white. SOLUTION: In the driving method of the present invention, only a surface light source unit satisfying the following conditions is operated to enhance the luminance. The conditions are: (1) the average maximum of light emission control signals (X<SB>R</SB>, X<SB>G</SB>, X<SB>B</SB>) supplied to a red light emitting sub-pixel, a green light emitting sub-pixel and a blue light emitting sub-pixel, respectively, of each pixel constituting a color liquid crystal display device is in a proportion equal to or higher than a predetermined value; (2) the number of white display pixels in which all of the light emission control signals (X<SB>R</SB>, X<SB>G</SB>, X<SB>B</SB>) of three colors supplied to one pixel are equal to or larger than a given value is within a given range of proportions; (3) a group of white display pixels possesses an area equal to or larger than a given value; and (4) the number of surface light sources with enhanced luminance corresponding to display region units with enhanced luminance is equal to or smaller than a given value.
