<p>Redn. is effected at low temps. in the presence of a transition metal salts. Organo cpds. which may be reduced include nitriles, carboxylic acids, their esters and salts, disulphides, azo cpds, hydrazo cpds, sulphohalides, ketones, aldehydes; also thio-acid amides, nitro cpds, aldoximes, alcohols, phenols, etc., but the reduction is particularly applicable to the reduction of aliphatic and aromatic nitriles. The preferred transition metal salt is cobalt chloride, and the reaction temp. and time depends on the type of cpd. being reduced. Thus benzonitrile is reduced to benzylamine and is recovered from the reaction mixture as the hydrochloride.</p> |
