PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a semiconductor light emitting device which has a wide-band spectrum distribution and can arbitrarily control the spectrum distribution. SOLUTION: An active layer 15 has a structure of a different gain wavelength along the waveguide direction of light, and at least one electrode layer 19 on a upper or lower surface is constituted of two or more electrodes 19a, 19b and 19c separated from each other in the waveguide direction so that the spectrum distribution of light emitted from the active layer 15 is made variable.
