PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remarkably increase the possibility of detecting a servo track where serve data are defective, and to remarkably decrease the possibility of write error in a data storage when a user uses the data storage. SOLUTION: A method is used to manage the defective region of the data storage that has a head where read and write elements are at different radial positions in a disk, and positions the head while reading the servo data recorded on the disk by the read element. While the read element is positioned at a target position when reading data normally, data write processing is executed by the write element. When a predetermined error occurs in the data write processing, the occurrence of the error is registered for a region in the data track for performing normal data write by using a servo track where the target position is included.
