Antimicrobial o-hydroxy-salicylanilides

Antimicrobial o-hydroxy-salicylanilides Title cpds. of formula (I) (where X is H or halogen and Y is CF3, is not >12C alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl or aralkyl, Y not being 8 C alkyl when X is H) are used for combatting injurious microorganisms other than in the textile industry. They are active against gram-positive and -negative bacteria and have the advantage of being odourless and colourless. They may be used as preservatives and disinfectants, and in plant-protection and agriculture; when combined with washing agents or surfactants they give washing or cleansing agents with excellent antibacterial and antimycotic activity.
