PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce assembling cost and component cost by relaxing dimensional tolerance in assembling precision and elemental components, by widening the interval between a scale and a light-receiving element without generation of position detecting error or reduction of S/N. SOLUTION: In the optical encoder, the distance H between a scale plate 4 and a light-receiving element 2 is enlarged, and the interval P of the receiving light cell array is set, corresponding to the interval of the slit projection image of the scale plate 4 projected on a light-receiving element 1, the position detection error caused by the difference between the interval of the slit projection image and the interval P of the light-receiving cell array is eliminated.
