PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a pulp yield, a cooking rate and pulp qualities in a process for subjecting wood chips of mixing system having different apparent density to kraft cooking. SOLUTION: A permeablility improver is added to wood chips having <0.9 g/cm<SP>3</SP>apparent density after steaming treatment before the wood chips are transported to a steaming vessel, and the apparent density after the steam treatment is adjusted to 0.9-1.05 g/cm<SP>3</SP>. Consequently, the apparent density of the wood chips of the mixing system is uniformed; the fall velocity of wood chips in a digester is uniformed, and a retention time in a digester, namely a digestion reaction time is uniformed to lessen dispersion of cooking degree.
