In means for guiding bar stock in an automatic lathe, as described in the parent Specification, the actuation of the rotatable member which causes opening and closing of the collet is effected by a rocker lever 16 which is actuated by the rod 23 of an electromagnet 24. Operation of the latter is controlled by a switch 25 which is actuated by a tool-holder 35 carrying a parting-off tool 35a which is the last of the tools operating at the end of the machine working cycle. At the end of the machining travel an adjustable stop 41 on the tool holder 35 actuates the switch 25 to operate the electromagnet 24. Other embodiments include an alternative form of collet to that described in the parent Specification and actuating devices for the lever 16 which may be pneumatic or hydraulic instead of the electromagnet described.
