<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display element enabling an image of high contrast ratio excellent in an angle-of-view characteristic to be displayed even upon high-duty driving. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element 1 includes: a liquid crystal cell 2 having a liquid crystal layer of negative dielectric anisotropy held between a pair of vertically aligned substrates; a pair of polarizing plates 3, 4 which hold the liquid crystal cell 2 therebetween and are arranged in a crossed Nichols configuration to each other; a retardation compensation layer 5 disposed between the polarizing plate 3 and the liquid crystal cell 2; and a reflection plate 6 disposed on the polarizing plate 4. The angle made by a fast axis of the retardation compensation layer 5 and an alignment direction of the liquid crystal layer upon voltage application is smaller than the angle made by an absorption axis of the polarizing plate and the alignment direction of the liquid crystal layer upon voltage application, and is more than 0° and is less than 50°. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
