PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning method which allows both side printing with high image quality free of untransfer, and an image forming apparatus using the cleaning method. SOLUTION: The cleaning method which allows both side printing with high image quality free of untransfer is characterized in that cleaning means 25A, 25B to clean first and second image bearing belts 21, 31 are controlled according to image information.
