PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector that is easy for a user to use and is capable of preventing power from wastefully consumed, by controlling the output of a light source lamp with more appropriate timing. SOLUTION: The projector 100 that projects and displays an image to a screen S based on light output from the lamp 2 includes a light receiving sensor 7 that detects the brightness of the surrounding of the projector 100. The projector 100 also includes a CPU 111 that performs a determination program 113b3 according to which determination is made, based on the detection result of the light receiving sensor 7 and a predetermined threshold, whether the brightness of the surrounding has been switched from a dark state to a bright state or from a bright state to a dark state. The projector 100 also includes a CPU 111 that performs a standby mode control program 113b4 according to which a standby mode is set such that the output of light from the lamp 2 is decreased or stopped in response to the determination that the brightness of the surrounding has been switched to a bright state from a dark state by the CPU 111 that has performed the determination program 113b3.
