<p>1,208,883. Severing glass sheets. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. 4 Oct., 1967 [4 Oct., 1966], No. 45170/67. Heading C1M. In a process of severing a scored sheet of glass, one surface of the scored sheet is supported on a first pair of pivotally mounted parallel spaced rotatable rolls and the opposite surface is contacted with a second pair of pivotally mounted parallel spaced rotatable rolls, the rolls of the second pair being spaced from each other a distance greater than that of the rolls of the first pair and being astride the first pair, the score line on the sheet is positioned to lie between the rolls of the first pair and the second pair of rolls is then moved relative to the first pair to apply pressure to the glass sheet so as to sever the sheet along the score line. A pair of rocker arms 19 are pivotally attached at 17 one to each end of a supporting member 15. A pair of spaced parallel rotatable rolls 30, 31 are mounted one to each of a respective end of each arm 19, each roll being equidistant from the pivot 17, and the axes of the rolls being in a different horizontal plane to that of the pivot 17. A further pair of rolls 32, 33 are similarly mounted on rocker arms 29 mounted about a pivot 28 on a lower support member. The pivots 17 and 28 lie on the line normal to the path of travel of scored sheet G, and may be in vertical alignment. The rolls 30, 31 are positioned astride the rolls 32, 33. A pre-scored glass sheet G, is moved along a conveyer into the severing apparatus until its score line is detected to lie between rolls 32, 33, e.g. by a light detector. At this point the rolls 30, 31 are then caused to move towards rolls 32, 33 causing equal bending moments about the score line and thus severing the sheet along the score line.
