<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting device which is substantially thin and provides a side radiation of uniform light in the radial direction, and can be coupled to an optical waveguide efficiently so as to generate uniform illumination. <P>SOLUTION: The light-emitting device includes one or more semiconductor layers, a reflective bottom surface, and a top surface coupled to the semiconductor layers. The semiconductor layers include an active region where a primary light is generated.
