Voltages appearing from two-terminal elements 16, such as thermocouples distributed throughout a nuclear reactor, are applied in sequence to first and second terminals 9 and 13 leading to a pulse amplifier 15 by means of an electric distributer including a valve 1 in which current can be circulated around a ring of electrodes 6a, 6b, 6c, &c., a load 7 being connected from each electrode to the first terminal 9, and a tapping 8 on each load being connected through a rectifier 8 arranged for conduction away from the tapping to one terminal 11 of an element 16, the other terminals 12 of the elements being connected to second terminal 13. In operation there appears in sequence at terminals 9 and 13 voltages comprising the sum of the voltages from the respective tappings 8 and the associated elements 16. A standard cell 14 is provided to offset to tapping voltages, precise balance being achieved by initial adjustment of each tapping, so that amplifier 15 is presented with only the voltages from the elements 16. To permit a large number of elements to be provided for, the elements are arranged in rows and columns, switching of the columns being effected by valve 1 in the manner described above and switching of the rows being effected by a second valve 21. The operation of this second valve adds further voltages to those presented to terminals 9 and 13, a second standard cell being added at 14 to offset the voltages and precise balance being achieved by adjustment of tappings 32 on the loads 31. The loads are connected to a stabilized negative supply via gas-filled diodes 30. Valve 1 is driven by pulses from an oscillator 35 which also drives valve 21, a gate 39 being included in the circuit to valve 21 and controlled by the last electrode of valve 1 so that valve 21 is stepped once for each complete cycle of valve 1. A circuit for switching only a single row of elements and utilizing only a single multicathode valve arranged in a circuit substantially as described above with reference to valve 1 is disclosed with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown).
