An apparatus and a method for controlling an image in a display device are provided to increase a sharpness value in case of a still image and decrease a sharpness value in case of a moving image to obtain optimized images. An apparatus for controlling an image in a display device includes an image signal input unit(300), a picture quality controller(700), a sharpness controller(400), and an image signal processor(500). The image signal input unit receives an image signal. The picture quality controller outputs a code value according to a degree of motion of the image signal inputted through the image signal input unit. The sharpness controller controls the sharpness of the image signal. The image signal processor processes the image signal output from the sharpness controller such that an image corresponding to the image signal is displayed on a display(600).
