A method and an apparatus for synthesizing images by using edge detection are provided to solve a problem that a background image and an image of a person or an object which is combined with the background image are mixed when the images are synthesized using a blue screen. The edge of a primitive image is detected(310). It is determined whether previously stored edge patterns include an edge pattern corresponding to the detected edge(320). When the previously stored edge patterns include the edge pattern corresponding to the detected edge, the primitive image and a previously stored or selected background image are synthesized in such a manner that the inside of the detected edge displays the primitive image and the outside of the detected edge displays the background image(330).
