A method for validating a signature on a DVD is disclosed. The method includes comparing the time to read at least one unprocessed sector within the ECC block with the time to read at least one processed sector within said ECC block, wherein the ECC block includes a partially disabled ECC written to the DVD, and if the time to read the processed sector is greater than the time to read an unprocessed sector, then the signature is valid.
