<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which starts from wood charcoal as a starting material and produces a dense, compact, homogeneous and isotropic ceramic bodies containing a high content of silicon carbide. <P>SOLUTION: The method is suitably used for providing ceramics having a geometric density of at least 2.80 g/cm<SP>3</SP>, and comprises the steps of: preparing a wood charcoal powder having a particle diameter of not more than 40 μm; producing a homogeneous mixture from the wood charcoal and a carbonizable binder; producing a shaped body (green body) from the above mixture; carbonizing the green body at a temperature of 900°C or higher in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to form a carbonized preliminary shaped body; and siliconizing the carbonized preliminary shaped body by the infilteration with a silicon melt. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
