PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a placing system which uses a catheter for delivering a stretch resistant embolic device at a predetermined site within a blood vessel. SOLUTION: A medical device for placing an embolic device at a predetermined site within the blood vessel of a human body includes a delivery catheter 12 and a flexible pusher member 16 slidably disposed within a lumen 14 of the catheter. The embolic device 23 is retained within the delivery catheter by a mechanical interlocking mechanism which is attached to the distal end of the pusher member and includes an engagement member 18 extending through a retaining ring 28 at the proximal end of the embolic device. A detachment member 30 extends through an aperture at the distal end of the engagement member to lock the embolic device onto the pusher member. A kicker member 17 extends from the distal end of the pusher member and is biased to lift the retaining ring off from the engagement member to ensure the release of the embolic device when the detachment member is withdrawn from the aperture of the engagement member.
