PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for generating image data used for determining the visual characteristics of a precious stone such as a cut diamond, capable of being recognized by human eyes. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a support structure for supporting the precious stone, having a symmetry axis, such that the symmetry axis is parallel to an axis X, passing through an observation position; an illumination means for illuminating the disposed precious stone with light in various patterns; a rotating means for rotating the support structure relative to a optical pattern about the axis X; a camera, which acquires an electronic image of the light and outputs it as image data; and a control means, which controls the rotating means and the camera, such that the camera acquires images along the axis X at respective two or more different rotation positions of the support structure, while relatively rotating to the light pattern. The illumination means is equipped with a reflector, having a concave surface which reflects the light toward the precious stone, and the concave surface has a region with relative reflexivity and a region with relative irreflexivity, thereby generating the light pattern.
