An apparatus and a method for receiving fax data are provided to determine a priority order of fax data based on an identification information table stored in a non-volatile memory. A communication network interface part(220) is connected to a communication network so as to receive fax data. The first storing part(270) stores the fax data received through the communication network interface part. A control part(260) determines whether the first storing part has an area capable of storing the fax data, receives only fax data with a priority order if size of the area capable of storing the fax data is not larger than a reference value, and stores the received fax data in the first storing part. An input part(212) receives the reference value and identification information of the fax data having the priority order. The second storing part stores the reference value and the identification information.
