A vehicle seat comprising a back support and an active head restraint apparatus (10) pivot mounted to the back support, the head restraint apparatus comprising a head restraint pad (12) connected with an actuating lever (30) extending internally of the back rest for causing pivot movement of the head restraint pad towards the head of an occupant of the seat when the occupant's back presses against the back rest to apply a force to the actuating lever due to vehicle collision and a locking arrangement (34, 38) for allowing the pivot movement of the head restraint pad towards the occupant's head and substantially preventing return pivot movement of the head restraint pad.
