A current-voltage nonlinear resistor is provided to enhance resistance, a nonlinear resistance characteristic, and thermal stability by containing Bi, Co, Mn, Sb, Ni, Ga, and R within a composition range. A current-voltage nonlinear resistor contains ZnO as a main component, and Bi, Co, Mn, Sb, Ni, Ga, R as sub components. The sub components are Bi2O3 of 0.3 to 1.5 mol%, Co2O3 of 0.3 to 2.0 mol%, of MnO of 0.4 to 3.0 mol%, Sb2O3 of 0.5 to 4.0 mol%, NiO of 0.5 to 4.0 mol%, Ga^3+ of 0.0005 to 0.02 mol%, and R2O3 of 0.05 to 1.0 mol%. The R, a rare-earth element, contains one among Dy, Eu, Er, Tm, Gd, Y, Ho, and Yb. A side insulation layer(2) is formed by coating and thermally processing an inorganic insulation material to the side of a sintered body(1). The current-voltage nonlinear resistor is produced by polishing upper and lower end faces of the sintered body with the side insulation layer and spray-coating an electrode(3) to a polished surface of the sintered body.
