1378247 Explosive compositions; fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate T TAKAYAMA 13 April 1972 [24 April 1971] 17175/72 Headings C1B and C1D A composite material comprises a mixture of ammonium nitrate and an inorganic gel, the mixture having been made by allowing ammonium nitrate to crystallize out at room temperature from a solution of ammonium nitrate in a purified and swollen inorganic gel derived from a clay. The gel may be prepared by mixing a washed montmorillonite, vermiculite, or hydrated halloysite with water, passing the sol. formed through a sieve, and boiling the sol. to form a gel. The gel may be mixed with a hot concentrated solution of ammonium nitrate. Explosive compositions are made by mixing the composite material with aluminium powder; other optional additives are activated carbon and silica gel powder. The composite material may be used as a fertilizer, e.g. for adding to soil at the bottom of a fishpond or for the cultivation of seaweed.
