PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a unique pseudo random number for each authentication supplicant being connected and to generate a complicated and robust pseudo random number in an authentication apparatus such as an authentication server, which relates to the authentication apparatus and a random number generation method. SOLUTION: A seed value 1-3 is generated based on a MAC address 1-1 of a terminal device of an authentication supplicant and a timer value 1-2 of a timer of an authentication apparatus as well as a light receiving level of an optical signal, and a pseudo random number is generated by a pseudo random number generation function 1-4 on the basis of the seed value 1-3. The terminal device of the authentication supplicant is notified of the pseudo random number, a message digest calculated on the basis of the pseudo random number and a password is received at the terminal device of the authentication supplicant, and authentication is performed in comparison with a message digest calculated based on the pseudo random number and the password at the present device. A hash function of MD5 authentication scheme is used as the message digest and an authentication system of IEEE802.1x can be applied as an authentication means. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
