An authentication device of an access point in a wireless portable internet system and a method thereof are provided to access various packet access routers by performing packet access router coupling a UDP(User Datagram Protocol) with an SCTP(Stream Control Transmission Protocol). A method for authentication of an access point in a wireless portable internet system includes the steps of: performing a mutual authentication by transceiving an authentication related message based on a terminal and RSA(Rivest Shamir Adleman) according to a device authentication request from the terminal(S120,S130); performing user authentication by transceiving the authentication related message based on the terminal and an EAP(Extensible Authentication Protocol) according to the user authentication request of the terminal(S140,S150); and if the device authentication and the user authentication are completed, performing exchange of SA(Security Association) information and authentication algorithm between the terminal and the device by transceiving a security related message with the terminal(S190).
