A method and an apparatus for selecting an AP(Access Point) in a wireless LAN terminal are provided to improve the communication performance of a wireless LAN terminal by making the wireless LAN terminal store the SSID(Service Set Identifier) of an existing AP so that the wireless LAN terminal can extract APs having the same SSID among accessible APs if access to a new AP is required, select one of them, and maintain a connection with the existing network. A wireless LAN terminal, storing SSID of the presently connected AP, judges whether connection with the AP has been disconnected(S201) when it is moved by a user. In case it is confirmed that the connection with the AP has been disconnected, the wireless LAN terminal outputs a scan request signal for access to a new AP and scans accessible APs(S203). The wireless LAN terminal compares the stored SSID with SSIDs of the scanned APs, and extracts APs having the same as the stored SSID(S204). The wireless LAN terminal selects an AP having the largest RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator) value among the extracted APs and accesses the selected AP(S206).
